I am an artist. I paint pictures in oils, mostly portraits. It is a struggle. Finding commissions. Accommodating clients. Seeking a likeness. But all that is my choice. I love to paint.
When asked to do the workshop project, apart from feeling a bit nervous I had hoped that at best to be able to pass on just a little bit of something which might be useful.
Together with Jayne we set ourselves a task to look at a painting of King George V, by Walter Sickert, who produced his picture solely using a newspaper photograph, and to follow a similar method for our own study.
Each student created a remarkable image. Not all were self portraits - without exception they were all insightful and highly accomplished works. The students watched and listened as I laid out some instruction. The enthusiastic creative class attacked this idea with incredible fervour and passion. At times the excitement at what was happening in the room was quite wonderful and truly inspiring. Many fine works were made by a very talented group.
Personally I found the experience to be highly rewarding. For every small assistance given I gained enormous insight coupled with a real feeling of creative fulfilment.
With such passion and zeal the end result was always going to be special.
